The Pink Ribbon Foundation was established in 2000 with the support of celebrity Patrons.
Here's Hollywood actor Joseph Fiennes at a very special launch event at Trafalgar Square, London. I remember this day very clearly - there was a real buzz at having such an iconic star in our midst - especially after the success of Shakespeare in Love.
Joseph's mother, the painter, and novelist Jennifer Lash Fiennes (known as Jini Fiennes) was diagnosed with breast cancer in the late 1980's. It was an aggressive tumour, caught late, which forced her to reevaluate her life.
She dealt with it by putting on her Nikes and a rucksack and setting off on a pilgrimage. She took a ferry to France, travelled to Lourdes and then all the way to Spain to a city called Santiago de Compostela. She travelled alone, not wanting any family with her - the pilgrimage was about meeting other people, an exchange of faith, understanding and religions.
The story of her journey and the places she visited feature in her book, On Pilgrimage - a conversation with cancer. Joseph said of the book, "The most amazing line in the book, I think, is one of the bravest I've ever read: 'Poor Cancer'. To look at cancer as this impoverished entity, rather than something to fear, or to have hatred for - you realise this is a book about understanding."
