Maia's Story
Far too many people I know have been affected by breast cancer, hence why I’ve decided to do my part to help raise awareness and money in order to help support those who are suffering from or have been affected by breast cancer. Far too many people I know have been affected by breast cancer, hence why I’ve decided to do my part to help raise awareness and money in order to help support those who are suffering from or have been affected by breast cancer. Back in 2011 my Mum was first diagnosed with breast cancer; thankfully the prognosis was good, meaning that she didn’t have to go through chemo and was able to keep it from my sister and I, who were only 6 and 7. When I found out after she had gone through treatment, the gravity of what had happened actually hit me and, as she was still in remission and taking tamoxifen, I feared that the cancer would come back. In July 2021 she was officially 10 years cancer free and could stop taking her tamoxifen, which to me meant that she was cured and I could breathe a sigh of relief as I could stop worrying that I’d lose my Mum. In August 2022, a year later, she was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer. This time the prognosis was not as simple or as clear as last time. Being much older I can now understand what is going on. Watching the strongest woman you know in pain, constantly tired and trying her hardest to put on a brave face so that you don’t have to worry about her is incredibly difficult. However, in no way am I comparing this feeling to the battle she is having to fight. I aim to raise £400 by the time I complete my skydive on the 5th of February 2023, In order to assist people experiencing similar situations.
